At the Mercy of the Queen A Novel of Anne Boleyn Anne Clinard Barnhill Books
"At the Mercy of the Queen" is a new perspective on the court of King Henry VIII. This novel relates the story of Queen Anne's cousin, Lady Margaret Shelton. If you are a fan of the TV series "The Tudors," the Madge you meet in this novel bears little resemblance to the TV character. The "Pretty Madge" of this novel is slender, half the age of Queen Anne, and ardently in love with the son of a prominent favorite in Henry's court.
Queen Anne is sincerely perturbed by Cromwell's ambitions to destroy the Catholic monastaries and claim the treasure to the king's coffers. The Queen makes a bitter enemy of Cromwell, using sermons against him. While Anne is manipulative, in this novel she lives in absolute terror of Henry and her ultimate failure in giving him the son and heir he so desires.
Familiar characters appear in new light - Mark Smeaton and George, Anne's brother especially.
Lady Madge is steadfast and loyal to Anne, to the point of sacrificing the things most dear to her, to the bitter end of burying Anne's remains after her execution.
This is an entertaining, leisurely read. There is romance, intrigue, and a rich historical cast of characters. I enjoyed this book, reading it quite quickly. I did not give it five stars because I prefer the historical details to be more prominent.

At the Mercy of the Queen A Novel of Anne Boleyn Anne Clinard Barnhill Books Reviews
This book was pleasant fiction, and gave a different viewpoint, while following the historical "facts" attributed to the life and times of Anne Boleyn.
I love books about Henry VIII and his many wives. This is a book that I always wanted to pick up and never wanted to put down. It told me things about Anne Boleyn that I had never read before. I want to read more books like this - and want them to be longer!
A very good read. I enjoyed the novel and I could not wait to read each chapter. I was not disappointed with the story. I realized that it was a fictional account.
Well researched and sensitively written, this novel shows a sympathetic view of Ann Boleyn through the eyes of her (real life inspired) cousin. Highly recommended (and I am a picky one!).
A great book! Very enjoyable!
This was a captivating tale filled with romance, intrigue and a rich cast of characters! Anne Clinard Barnhill does a wonderful job of bringing this dramatic time period to life. I felt like I was Madge, torn between her Queen and the man she loves, living and working inside Anne Boleyn's chambers. I learned a lot about the time period while being throughly entertained! I can't wait to read the author's next book!
I really enjoyed At the Mercy of the Queen. I learned a lot about everyday life for a queen and for the upper class in general in that era that I'd never known. Ms. Barnhill goes into wonderful detail in such a way as to be unobtrusive and informative (not pages and pages of boring trivia) And it's obvious this lady knows her stuff. I have spent about 30 years reading on this subject, and she has brought up some very interesting points that I'd never pondered (that there are several historians who believe Anne put her cousin up to becoming the kings mistress, for example) I always like reading books where I can learn something new.
I enjoyed the premise, because she handled it very tastefully (unlike SOME authors I could mention, Ms. Gregory). I found myself saying, more than once, "Well, it could have happened this way," which is really a neat feeling.
In all it was a fun, well written book.
I am currently on page 85 and came to read the reviews to see if I was the only one that could not connect with Madge. I read the positive reviews before purchasing and was excited to read another fictional account involving the Tudors, and I was ok with it until a few chapters in and then it got weird. It was as if the author turned over the writing to a children's author. It went from being an adult account to what I would consider material meant for a middle schooler to comprehend.
I also thought that once Madge became the inner chamber maid to the queen, she began asking for exceptions and questioning Anne when no one would dare say those things. She would ask the most direct question and then retrieve into a juvenile expression or action. And Anne was portrayed just as juvenile, not the calculating woman I believe she really was. And yes, the King and Queen were portrayed poorly-over the top and...well, juvenile. I keep using that word but it best describes their interactions.
Perhaps it gets better and Barnhill will find her voice again. The beginning was very promising, but something happened and it is not the same writing at page 85 that is was on page 3 when chapter one begins.
