If you ever had a question about what happens behind the scenes on a Carnival cruise ship read this book. It has given me greater respect and understanding for the crew members from the room stewards to the kitchen personnel and wait staff. I started cruising in 2005 and now have over 13 cruises under my belt. The staff does an outstanding job and now which is great when you know the cuts the cruise lines have made to their staffing levels in the 12 years since I started sailing. I asked a person who worked in the salon once why there weren't any Americans working onboard. She curtly stated that no American would work the hours they have to. After having read this book, I can DEFINITELY understand what she was talking about.

Cruise Confidential A Hit Below the Waterline Where the Crew Lives Eats Wars and Parties One Crazy Year Working on Travelers' Tales Brian David Bruns 9781932361605 Books Reviews

This is a great book which I read while on a cruise. It paints an interesting, and somewhat depressing, picture of the working conditions on a cruise ship, especially for an "outsider" American employee. Anyone who has cruised can testify that the life of the average employee on a ship involves non-stop work and long hours, although the conditions are much better today than when this book was written.

The main theme of the book, other than exploring the working conditions on the ships, was that the author was attempting to follow and connect with a girl he had met, and fallen in love with, who was working on a ship. Throughout his journey he describes many encounters with numerous beautiful women who were more than willing to have an intimate relationship with him--all of which he refused. Personally, I found that a bit hard to believe--that he could resist so much temptation in such circumstances. If true, he obviously is a stronger person than most men I know.

The question that the book left me with is somewhat of a moral dilemma--is it acceptable to patronize any cruise line which treats its workers like 19th century sweatshop labor? Or, is it a non-issue since without these jobs most of the employees wouldn't be able to make a decent living?

Overall, I think it was a great "read" for anyone who has an interest in cruising.
This book gives a perspective from a young, attractive American male entering a new profession on a cruise boat. The cruising industry is no different from any other industry-what the public thinks or sees is often very different from the experience of those who work in that industry.

I enjoyed reading Brian's experiences. They were funny, frustrating, sometimes repetitive, but always interesting. I have been on a couple of cruises, on different cruise lines, so I had some experience to compare with for reference.

This book does not give specific advice about maximizing your cruise experience. This book does not reveal 'cruise secrets' that will maximize your dollar. But, this book will give you a peek into what a dancer, or a waffle maker, or a bar tender, or a laundry washer, etc experiences day after day, week after week, month after month, consecutively, while taking care of your delightful, well-mannered, considerate family. The stereotypes have some truth and for those who are offended about the references on Americans as workers- I would assume you have not travelled outside of the United States and seen how the rest of the world works and the conditions they work in. Some are better, most are far worse. Most of the world doesn't care about being fair. It is just business.

I really enjoyed Brian's story and appreciated that he was able to stay true to who he was.
This book was interesting enough, and there were far fewer sordid details that one might expect from the initial description. What was somewhat disturbing is how difficult and demanding the work was. Crew members might put in 16 hour days 7 days a week. As with many work environments, there is drama and the impossible boss to deal with. Given the living arrangements are confined, and the work environment so stressful, I can only imagine what keeps people working for a cruise line. The book was an engaging and manageable read.
Really enjoyed this book. In order to be with the woman he loves (she is from Romania and works on a cruise ship to support her family), the author decides to get hired by Carnival Cruise Line. He is the only American ever hired in the Food Service Department and he quickly learns that work on the cruise is ridiculously hard and the hours are long. He must endure the politics of the ship, prejudice because he is the only working American, shares the truth about what really goes on with the crew on the cruise ships and ultimately ends up no closer to the woman he loves, despite traveling all over the world.
This is a really enjoyable book, with interesting characters, fascinating places and tells you just about everything you ever wanted to know about what goes on under the guest cabins on cruise ships. Great storytelling skills.
