After big-time Hemingway fan Jack Phelan falls into a coma following an accident, he somehow finds himself in Key West, Florida, literally rubbing shoulders with his longtime hero.
The legendary author has been sent down by “The Main Man in the clouds” to see if Jack has what it takes to write a book for Him. And though Hemingway knows that his findings may very well determine whether Jack lives or dies, he doesn’t have a clue that the book is going to be about him.
Over the next four days, Jack and Hem not only knock around Key West but they also travel to some more of the legendary author’s old haunts. Together the two meet up with many of Hemingway’s long gone friends and have some rollicking good times. But during their journey they are also forced to go nose to nose with some things that are not at all fun and games. They both face highly-emotional tests of strength as well. But wait. That’s not all. After their time together ends is when things really get out of hand.

Four Days with Hemingway Ghost edition by Tom Winton Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
While I knew this book was not based on actual time with Hemingway, I really felt that I had, too, spent sometime with him. A lot of the events that the author described were events I had read about (Hemingway is one of my favorites!), but I felt them in a whole new way as I read this book. I think the book would be an excellent way to engage students in understanding more about Ernest Hemingway. I think they would stick with the story more than just a regular biography that they had to read. For myself, I was very interested in seeing what happened to the author as he tried to regain his life after the accident. I would consider it an easy read that moved steadily and kept my attention.
Kudos to the author !!!
In this book, the author tells the story of a supernatural encounter with the literary icon, Ernst "Papa" Hemingway. Told from a first-person perspective, the story reads very much like a personal memoir. With pages that are filled with dynamic scenes, historic details, and colorful monologue, the author weaves a story that is believable. In fact, the prose draws the reader into the story and gives us cause to maybe loosen our grip on our notion of what is absurd. It is then that we open our minds to the realm of possibility. After all, there is much that is beyond our current knowledge and understanding of the universe. With that said, who are we to say that such an encounter is impossible? Shouldn't we at least entertain the idea???
As so many of us do these days, I bumped into Tom Winton and his best selling works via facebook. I soon discovered that he was living not too far from me and had been a long-time Floridian. Being a fledgling author, I wanted to delve into what made his writing so popular. The cover of "Four Days with Hemingway's Ghost" and the many reviews quickly lured me in.
It didn't take long for me to grow fond of Jack Phelan. Being a long time grass cutter myself, I could relate to Jack's little accident.
Tom Winton created a journey that was believable and sometimes heart wrenching. I'm not fond of first person but I barely even noticed since the story was intriguing and the settings were so vivid. I felt like I was there with Papa Hemingway and Jack. I could see the haze of the smoke and smell that mix of alcohol and old well-visited bars. I enjoyed the flora and fauna, familiar scenes in the Keys, and the busy streets of Cuba. I swayed and swooned with the dancers.
It took me a bit longer to read this book because I'm not a real fan of e-books. I still love the feel of a book in my hands and the turning of the pages. I was enamoured by the obvious amount of research and the creativity involved in Tom Winton's portrayal of this story. Naturally, I was eager to learn if Jack would come back to consciousness and Blanche. I was never disappointed. In fact, I read the ending few pages several times just so I could stay a little while longer with Ernest Hemingway's ghost and Jack.

I live in SE FLorida...evidently somewhere south of the author Tom Winton. As a big Hemingway fan...studied him in college & grad school... I had so much fun with this book.
If you've ever had the fantasy of meeting one of your favorite authors or historical persons... this book is for you.
Initial Concept Main Character is in a life-threatening accident which puts him in a coma where he encounters Ernest Hemingway's ghost 50 yrs after Hemingway's death by suicide.
As it turns out... these two have quite a lot to discuss ...places to go & things to do.
At the heart...it's about following our dreams & bliss & using our gifts with gratefulness and gratitude. Also about learning from others.
I loved the movie MEET JOE BLACK with Anthony Hopkins and Brad Pitt.
This book reminds me of that film.
The author has an excellent sense of humor and has done a lot of research to get the details of Hemingway's life accurate.
I read a review from an English teacher worried about the grammar...
MY ADVICE If a book is leaving you entertained and inspired... don't ruin your own fun by "grading the paper". Reading should take us places we can't get to otherwise and this book does that. Hope I bump into the author at Hemingway's house in Key West one day!
